Poppers for Bluefin Tuna
Curated 100kg+ Proven Tuna Poppers
MOCKINGBIRD / HUDDLE MONTANA / ISOLABLEU BALSAM / CRAZY WORKS
We don't stock mass-market lures
This category features only poppers designed to "break the surface" for bluefin and yellowfin tuna casting. Based on AMBERJACK’s actual experience casting in the Genkai Sea, the Sea of Japan, Hokkaido, and the Tokai region—landing monster tuna over 100kg—and feedback from anglers across the country, we have carefully selected only those tuna poppers we truly believe are essential.
What is a Tuna Popper? ── Why they work for bluefin
A tuna popper is a topwater plug designed to strike the surface with a cup-shaped head, attracting bluefin tuna with splashes, popping sounds, and "water displacement" combined with bubbles. If a diving pencil is a lure meant to "swim and trigger a bite," a popper is a lure meant to "alert with sound and bubbles, then pause to trigger a bite."
In recent years, Japanese waters have seen consistent sightings of bluefin tuna exceeding 200kg and 300kg. In situations like small bait shoals or when schools become wary and sink as boats approach, pencils may get no reaction. However, it is not uncommon in the field for fish to strike exclusively at a popper’s "column of bubbles" and the "pause when it comes to a stop." This is exactly why every tuna casting box should contain a few poppers.
How to Choose a Bluefin Tuna Popper ── 5 Key Points
1. Size and Weight: Targeting boiling schools or drawing fish out?
The standard for tuna poppers is 210–265mm and around 100–150g. For targeting boiling schools where casting distance and immediate post-splash action are priority, use slim models around 240mm with low air resistance. For "drawing fish out" from an empty sea surface, large poppers in the 250mm/140g class are powerful. When bait is large, you may find that fish ignoring all other plugs will chase only these large poppers.
2. Material: Balsa / Wood / Foamed Urethane
Balsa Wood
Its overwhelming lightness and buoyancy make "hyper-response," moving nimbly on the surface even with large hooks, its greatest weapon. There is significant variation between individual pieces, so quality depends on checking the buoyancy of each lure one by one.
Wood (Handmade)
The exquisite weight balance crafted by artisans creates a lifelike quality not found in mass-produced plugs. Its appeal lies in its durability honed on rock shores and its powerful "water displacement."
Foamed Urethane
The strength lies in stable quality; anyone can achieve consistent casting distance and action. It is easier to keep costs down even with domestic production, making it a great material for creating "must-have" practical items.
Selection Criteria
It's not about which material is "better," but "in which situation to cast." Use balsa for its buoyant response for wary fish, wood for its water displacement with large bait, and foamed urethane for its stability when casting into boiling schools repeatedly.
3. Float Posture: "Vertical Float" and the "Hotoke" (Leave-it) Method
The most important factor in tuna poppers in recent years is the vertical float posture upon hitting the water. A popper that stands vertically with its head above the surface produces precise vertical popping and splashing with just a light twitch of the rod, and when you "leave it"—letting it drift while paused—it triggers bites. For high-activity schools, use continuous pops to get their attention; for wary fish, pause it to trigger the strike. The ability to perform this "action and stillness" with one lure is the strength of a vertical-float popper.
4. Buoyancy and Hooks: Can it handle a Big Decoy 10/0?
Hooks for monster bluefin are typically 5/0–10/0 for trebles, or Big Decoy 10/0 class for singles. Whether the lure maintains buoyancy even when carrying 50–60g of hook weight is a matter of life and death for a popper. We select our products based on "how they float with recommended hooks installed." Please be sure to check the recommended hook size on each product page.
5. Strength: Through-Wire and Coating
In a long fight with a 100kg+ fish, if the body cracks but the wire doesn't pull out, you can still catch the fish. A through-wire construction is a must. Furthermore, balsa and wood must have a robust coating (like armor coating) applied in multiple layers to withstand contact with the fish's teeth and the side of the boat.
AMBERJACK Curated Tuna Popper Lineup
MOCKINGBIRD 245 Color VER. ── 245mm / 110g, Foamed Urethane, Fully Domestic Production
Developed to conquer boiling schools and high-activity monsters, this is a vertical-float, slim popper designed specifically for the "leave-it" method. It features practical strength and action characteristics polished over several years of testing, ensuring consistent flight and superb response that allows you to manipulate the water surface at will. Production is outsourced only for the painting process to professional factories, maintaining domestic production quality at an accessible price. Available in 5 practical colors: Sardine Blue, Neon Pink Back, Neon Yellow Back, White Back, and Silver Keimura. Recommended treble hooks are 4/0–6/0 class (approx. 10g each, e.g., DECOY Y-S23 6/0, BKK VIPER-61 5/0).
HUDDLE MONTANA 250 ── 250mm / approx. 140g, Pure Handmade Wood
p>When Captain Kikuchi of Steel in Hakodate used the Montana, originally developed for yellowtail, for bluefin casting, he said: "This isn't just 'drawing them in,' it's 'summoning' them!" The MONTANA 250 is the bluefin-specialized model born from that demand. It condenses the buoyancy and balance needed to carry large tuna hooks into a voluminous body. It is the strongest and largest class of the Montana series, which has successfully drawn out fish that ignored other plugs when bait was large. An indestructible body with through-wire construction, forged through extensive fishing on rock shores nationwide.
ISOLABLEU BALSAM 225 / 245 / 265 ── Selected Balsa Wood, 100% Buoyancy Inspection
Born from an impactful encounter with a monster tuna in the Genkai Sea during summer, this is a custom balsa popper designed with the requirement of "carrying a Big Decoy 10/0" in mind. All sizes can hold two Big Decoy 10/0s; recommended trebles are 7/0–10/0 class. Each balsa piece is visually inspected for weight and buoyancy, discarding about 15% of the material to ensure 100% buoyancy performance. Due to its precise vertical movement and buoyant response, reports have come in from various locations that BALSAM drew bites in small-bait schools where other plugs were ignored. This is the flagship of AMBERJACK’s private brand, ISOLABLEU, capable of both targeting schools and drawing fish out.
CRAZY WORKS RUBBLE SLIM 210 TYPE TUNA ── 210mm, Handmade Wood, 6 Colors
The CRAZY WORKS line, crafted entirely by artisan Mr. Kashiwagi at his workshop in Fukuoka, includes this model specially tuned for bluefin and yellowfin tuna. It exhaustively pursues vertical posture upon hitting the water and powerful "water displacement" and "vibrations" that you wouldn't expect from a slim body. Its low-center-of-gravity design makes it difficult to pop out of the water even with high-speed action, ensuring stable diving even in schools or strong winds. A trump card for when you want to target a small-bait pattern with a smaller silhouette.
How to Choose by Situation
| Situation | Recommended Model | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Boiling schools / High activity | MOCKINGBIRD 245 | Casting distance and immediate response. Attract with continuous pops. |
| Drawing out / Large bait | MONTANA 250 | "Summons" fish with the water displacement of a voluminous body. |
| Wary schools / Small-bait schools | BALSAM 225 / 245 | Triggers strikes with precise vertical movement and "leave-it" pauses. |
| Monster target / Big Decoy 10/0 | BALSAM 265 | Guarantees 100% buoyancy even with large hooks. |
| Strong wind / High-speed action / Mixed yellowfin | RUBBLE SLIM 210 | Low gravity keeps it from jumping out; strong vibrations. |
Tackle Settings to Maximize Tuna Poppers
Since a popper is a "pause and trigger" lure, the ideal rod is one designed specifically for bluefin tuna casting that can carry the lure's weight for long casts while allowing control of the popping sound with the tip. Consider tackle in two stages depending on the size of the target.
| Target Size | PE Line | Leader | Spinning Reel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average size up to approx. 100kg |
PE 5–8 | 90–140lb | 14000–20000 class |
| Monster size 100kg and up |
PE 12–15 | 250–300lb | 25000–30000 class |
To reliably tighten thick leaders, using a knot tool like the Ocean Knotter OK230BM ensures reliable leader changes in the field. For the overall concept of tackle, please also check "TUNA LIKES POPPER? — A Deep Dive into Premium Plugs" on the AJ BLOG.
※ The above are our recommended settings. Always prioritize the regulations (PE rating, max leader, etc.) set by the specific charter boat or field.
Frequently Asked Questions (Tuna Poppers)
Between a popper and a diving pencil, which should I buy first?
If you are fishing in a field where schools boil, buy a popper first. Casting into a boiling school to attract them with sound and bubbles, then pausing to trigger a bite, is more reproducible than with a pencil. In fields primarily involving "drawing fish out," carry both and rotate them based on reactions.
What hook size should I use?
Recommended sizes vary by model. MOCKINGBIRD 245 is roughly 4/0–6/0, and BALSAM is 7/0–10/0 class. Hooks that are too large will kill buoyancy and ruin the action, so please be sure to check the recommended hooks on each product page.
Isn't balsa wood fragile?
Although balsa is a soft material, it is designed with through-wire construction and tough coatings, assuming it will be used to catch fish in fights over 100kg. Scratches on the body after long fights are "proof of the catch." This is a choice made based on a design philosophy that prioritizes buoyancy above all else.
